The Rajya Sabha on Monday passed by a voice vote a legislation prescribing death penalty to those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years and making the law against such sexual offences more stringent.
The Bill replaces the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance promulgated on April 21, following an outcry over the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir and the rape of another woman at Unnao in Uttar Pradesh.The Lok Sabha passed the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2018 on July 30.Here are the LIVE updates:

Naidu chides members for thin attendance in House
Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu chided members for the thin attendance in the House when a crucial legislation to provide constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes was passed on Monday evening.
At the start of the day’s proceedings, Naidu observed that 156 members were present when the Rajya Sabha passed the constitution amendment bill. “We just scraped through,” he lamented. “We were exactly a little above the mark, that’s all. Otherwise, you can’t get it approved also.”

Centre withdraws FRDI Bill from Lok Sabha

Paswan urges members to pass consumer bill without debate
Consumer affairs minister Ram Vilas Paswan urged Lok Sabha members to pass the new Consumer Protection Bill without debate, saying it is a “revolutionary” and “non-controversial” measure aimed at benefiting consumers.
The Consumer Protection Bill, 2018 provides for establishment of an executive agency to be known as the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) which will deal with unfair trade practices and misleading advertisements.

“The PM has decided we will celebrate ‘Smajaik nyay pakhwada’ from August 15-31. We will go to every part of India and make people aware of decisions we made for social justice and safety. From next year, the BJP will celebrate Social Justice week from August 1-9 every year,” says BJP leader Ananth Kumar after Parliamentary meeting.
According to news agency PTI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi invoked ‘August Kranti’, named so as Mahatama Gandhi launched the Quit India movement in this month in 1942, as he spoke about the “historic” significance of the bills passed in this month by Parliament. “A historic law has been passed and another is likely to be passed in a day or two,” Kumar said.
Party sources said Modi also spoke about his government’s work for developing backward regions and backward sections of the society since it took over.
