Congress president Rahul Gandhi addressed a farmers’ rally in Piplya Mandi town of Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district, exactly a year after seven farmers died in police firing.
The rally kick-started Congress’ election campaign in the poll-bound state, where Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s government has been on the backfoot over the deaths of the farmers in Mandsaur on June 6 last year.
The Congress hopes to ride farmer discontent and dislodge the BJP in a state that the latter has ruled since 2003. Gandhi threw his weight behind the farmers’ protest in several states between June 1 and June 10, to observe the anniversary of the Mandsaur firing.
