Rajasthan man arrested after 40 years on the run, let off with Rs 100 fine
The court took the lenient approach considering the convict’s old age.
In 1976, a district court in Rajasthan’s Nagaur issued a warrant against Motilal Nai for selling sweets made from adulterated milk.
On the run since then, Nai, now 65, was nabbed by police on Tuesday and produced before a court, only to be let off with a fine of Rs 100.
The court took the lenient approach considering Nai’s old age.
In August last year, the Supreme Court told the Centre to consider making adulteration of milk punishable with life imprisonment.
“He fled to Andhra Pradesh after the warrant was issued against him and opened a tea shop there. He came back here after the demise of his wife recently,” said Nandram Bhadu, Kotwali station house officer.
Rai was arrested as part of a drive launched by Nagaur police to close old cases. Nai’s case came to its notice while scouring through old files.
“We went to his old address in Teliwada and found him living there. Some of his distant relatives were also living with him,” said the SHO.
A team of the health department had collected samples of sweets and milk from Nai’s shop in 1976. The warrant was issued after the samples failed to clear lab tests.
