Six people have been arrested in Bihar in the past three days after three separate videos of girls and women being allegedly sexually assaulted and abused in several parts of the state were widely shared on social media.
A tutor in the state’s Supaul district, Amit Kumar Jha, and his father were arrested on Tuesday after a minor girl lodged a case against four people with the women police station. She alleged in her complaint that Jha allegedly offered a cold drink laced with an intoxicant and raped her and recorded the act to blackmail her. Jha later posted the clip on social media when she failed to pay the money he asked for.
Police in Gaya arrested two men on Tuesday from Imamganj area of the district for allegedly thrashing a young girl and her fiancé at an isolated place. The police acted after a video showing the girl and her friend being assaulted by some men went viral on social networking sites on Friday.
The police action came after Gaya’s senior superintendent of police Rajiv Mishra asked his subordinates to lodge a complaint on the basis of the video and initiate an investigation.
In Saharsa, two of the five perpetrators were arrested in connection with the molestation of a schoolgirl — the video of which went viral on Monday. The video shows the girl, riding a bicycle, being accosted by a group of young men. The girl can be seen crying out for help as they grope her and snatch her dupatta. One of the five is seen trying to save her.
A report said the incident came to light after a police officer received the video on WhatsApp and lodged a first information report or FIR.

Meanwhile, the Janata Dal (United) come down heavily on the leader of opposition in the state assembly and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav for “defaming” Bihar. Party spokespersons Sanjay Singh, Neeraj Kumar and Ajay Alok alleged that the RJD leaders were responsible for making old videos viral.
“The molestation video of a Saharsa girl is two months old. It seems that Yadav has taken upon himself the task to defame the Bihar government by presenting the state in a bad light,” the JD(U) leaders said during a press conference. “He is desperate to get back to power,” the JD(U) leaders said.
They said the involvement of RJD leaders has been proved in most of the cases of molestation.
Yadav has questioned the government led by Nitish Kumar over the law and order situation in the state and has been tweeting the videos and news reports of molestation and sexual harassment in Bihar.
