Chennai: Tamil Nadu health minister Ma Subramanian on Wednesday chaired a meeting with officials in view of the rising Covid-19 cases.

Tamil Nadu on Wednesday added 476 coronavirus cases, including five returnees from domestic and overseas, pushing the tally to 3,458,445 till date, the health department said.

The meeting was held at the office of the Municipal Corporation of Chennai. Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Tamil Nadu health secretary Senthil Kumar, Chennai mayor Priya Rajan, Chennai deputy mayor Magesh Kumar and public health service officers participated in this meeting.

After more than two months, an 18-year-old woman succumbed to the virus in Thanjavur becoming the latest casualty mounting the death toll to 38,026. The last death due to Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu was reported on March 17.

According to a medical bulletin, the teenager affected with Covid-19 was admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital with complaints of fever and cough on June 14. She died on the same day and the cause of the death is being “ascertained”, the bulletin said.

As many as 169 people have recovered in the last 24 hours aggregating to 3,418,481 leaving 1,938 active infections, it said.

The state capital accounted for the majority of cases at 221 while the remaining was spread across 22 districts. Five districts including neighbouring Chengalpet and Tiruvallur logged new cases in double digits.

Chennai leads among districts with 984 active infections and overall 754,046 coronavirus cases.

A total of 14,268 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of tests conducted so far to 66,823,472, the health bulletin said.
