Tripura govt reserves 10% posts for women in police department
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has asked all the state governments to introduce reservation for women in police after 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case in Delhi.
The Tripura government will introduce 10% quota for women at all levels in the police department to combat crime against women and other vulnerable sections. Women currently have 5% representation in the state police against a national figure of 7.28%.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs had asked all the state governments to introduce reservation for women in police after 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case in Delhi.
“Initially, we will start with 10% reservation to fight crime against women. We may hike it later depending on the feedback,” law minister Ratan Lal Nath said after cabinet meeting on Saturday.
According to National Crime records Bureau (NCRB) Tripura ranked 14 in crimes against women in 2016. The BJP had made women’s safety an election campaign issue earlier this year.
The government also declared of fresh recruitment policy for all departments by making written test mandatory for recruitment. “Recruitment ranging from Group D to Group A would be based on written test. In some cases, 10% marks would be for an interview that would be video-graphed. The decision was taken to ensure transparency and avoid recommendations of influential people,” said the Law Minister.
Deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma in his last interaction at BJP party headquarters few days ago said that the revised recruitment rules would be decided in the cabinet.
BJP welcomed the decisions saying that the government’s decisions are pro-people.
“The government has fulfilled the pre-poll promise by introducing new recruitment policy with the provision of written test. Finally, the nepotism prevailed since the erstwhile government will come to an end. Also, women reservation in police force is encouraged,” BJP spokesperson Mrinal Kanti Deb.
The CPM denied the allegation of nepotism and said the poor people would not be benefited from the new revised policy.
“The Left government had given preference while recruiting women in police service. Secondly, the new recruitment policy would be helpful for the rich people as a large section of BPL people can’t fight their economic crisis through it,” said CPM central committee leader Goutam Das.
