“I slept at a relief camp last night in Changanacherry. Most people didn’t sleep thinking of a uncertain tomorrow,” the tourism minister tweeted on Wednesday tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah among others.

A user wondered how “someone posting pictures of themselves sleeping on Facebook when they are sleeping” and other asked him to stop his “publicity stunt”.

“While sleeping he took his selfie and http://shared.lol,” @rathhamirpur wrote.

“Who clicked your photo when you were sleeping and if someone from relief camp clicked this . Why you asked to send it to you ?? Pure publicity stunt.. #Nautankibaz,” Ahmed Bilal Chowdhary said.

“Ji, we know you are sleeping. But since you posted, you can also reply?” said a Facebook user in reaction to his post.

Another comment read, “Saar, in this third photo, one eye is not fully closed. Please delete or it’s a loss of honour for us. People will say that you’re looking at the camera like Modiji, so please delete the last photo”.

The minister clarified that the photo was uploaded by his personal staff but the sarcastic comments did not stop.

“Good publicity stunt. Now you can wake up and go back to the capital. Show is over,” Shubham Shah wrote.

“When we are already in the pits, here you are showing off your antics. Get up and go, saarey!” a post read.

“We have heard of sleepwalking. Have also seen it in person during our hostel days. But it’s for the first time that we’re seeing someone posting pictures of themselves sleeping on Facebook when they are sleeping. Even in the midst of this flood disaster, this man will make us die of laughter,” another user tweeted.

The picture was liked by 700 users on Twitter. And his tweet also generated #KannanthanamSleepChallenge with part of the minister’s full name: Alphons Joseph Kannanthanam and a lot of memes.

Alphons has been the main connection between the BJP-led Centre and CPI(M)-ruled Kerala since the worst floods in a century struck the state. The Centre has declared the devastating floods in Kerala a “calamity of severe nature” during which more than 370 people were killed and hundreds of thousands were driven from their homes.
