10 moderate quakes jolt tsunami-affected Nicobar

The Nicobar Islands experienced 10 moderate earthquakes on Wednesday at regular intervals with the strongest at 5.8 on the Richter scale.

Moderate intensity earthquakes were felt at the islands, most of them epicentred at Camorta and off the coast of Car Nicobar Islands, which was hit by earthquakes at 9:29 am, 10:52 am, 12:27 pm, 2:12 pm, 3:23 pm, 4:28 pm, 5:14 pm, 8:54 pm, 9:05 pm and 10:29 pm with intensities ranging from 5.8 to 5.0, the Met department release said.

Earlier, a quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale was felt off the North Coast of Little Nicobar Island at 9:29 am. While a quake measuring 5.4 jolted the Sumatra Islands on Tuesday night, the department said.

Sumatra, the place of origin of the December 26 killer tsunami waves, was hit at 3:30 am by a quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale.

Meanwhile, a 5.1 intensity trembler shook the east coast of Car Nicobar at 2:07 am, it said.

The region has been experiencing frequent aftershocks since the December 26 earthquake.

Another quake of moderate intensity was recorded at 5:18 am, the Meteorological department said in New Delhi.

The quake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale was epicentred off the east coast of Car Nicobar Islands while four moderate quakes recorded between 5:14 pm and 10:29 pm all ranged between 5 and 5.4 in the Richter scale.
