The trouble started after a student was severely beaten up by some students belonging to another hostel following an altercation last night, university sources said.

The student was hospitalised and this led to a clash between students of the two hostels.

The hostel authorities informed the police who were on night patrol outside the campus.

The policemen rushed inside the campus and fired in the air to disperse the warring factions.

Fifteen students and three policemen were injured in the clash, Guwahati city Senior Superintendent of police, VK Ramishetty told PTI in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Later, a meeting was held between the university authorities and the students wherein the latter promised to desist from further violence, varsity sources added.
