36 injured as Howrah-Amritsar Express derails

About 300 metres of railway track was completely damaged in the mishap and traffic on the route had come to a halt.

At least 36 passengers suffered minor injuries when Amritsar bound Howrah-Amritsar express derailed late on Saturday night affecting traffic in Lucknow-Dehradun section where about 300 metres of railway track was completely damaged.

Railway sources said eight general bogies of the train jumped tracks around 0100 hours near Nagina in the district.

About 300 metres of railway track was completely damaged in the mishap and traffic on the route had come to a halt, the sources said adding the passengers of the train were sent to their destinations by road.

A relief train was immediately rushed from Moradabad to bring the passengers, they said.

Several long distance trains like Jammu-Tawi, Himgiri Express, Howrah-Dehradun Express have been diverted while some others had been cancelled.

Senior officials had reached the site efforts were on to clear the tracks, sources said.

The cause of the mishap was yet to be ascertained, sources said adding however that a fishplate was found lying beside the track.
