Anthony Jennifer, Megavannan, Kankarathinam, refugees in Salem refugee camp, and Bala, a resident of Jaffna were arrested, when they tried to smuggle 50 tyres, 50 tubes, diesel cans, batteries and acid to Sri Lanka in a motorised country boat last night, said an official of the 'Q' branch police in Tuticorin district.

One person, Suresh managed to escape.

Police said Bala could be an LTTE activist.

With the Coastal Security and Coast Guard police tightening the vigil in the sea off Rameshwaram coast, the smugglers and LTTE seemed to have shifted their activities to Tuticorin coast, officials said.

The 'Q' branch police deals with militant activities.
