It was a twenty-first birthday the birthday boy will not forget in a hurry.
Of the two arrested and seven detained in the drug bust case near Bhavan’s college on Wednesday, one was celebrating his birthday, the police said.
It was unclear as to which one it was. Mohit Ramchandani (23), son of a businessman from Colaba had allegedly bought cocaine before meeting his friends.
Police Inspector Mritunjay Hiremath said Ramchandani reached Bhavans College with Efjan Beig (19), son of a cloth trader from Colaba.
The Anti-Narcotic Cell had a tip-off that Ramchandani and Beig sold and consumed drugs in the former’s car near the college.
“We saw Ramchandani and Baig snorting drugs in the car. Each had 2 grams of cocaine,” said Hiremath. The duo was arrested. With them in the car were a hotel owner and a final year B.Com student. “The others outside the car included two final year B. Com students, two first year B. Com students and an MBA student who were detained on suspicion of consuming drugs.”
The detainees live in Colaba, Charni Road and Agripada.
Of the seven detained, one is the 21-year-old son of a policeman, said Hiremath. “They were released after their blood samples were taken. The results are expected in a week.”
Ramchandani has told the police he was in touch with a Nigerian from whom he had bought drugs. “We have got the supplier’s contact details. Our aim is to nab those who sell drugs to students,” said Hiremath.
A week ago, the police carried out an anti-drug campaign in colleges. “This raid is a result of the campaign,” he said.
