AAP govt in Delhi may not last long, says Prashant Bhushan

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Prashant Bhushan on Monday expressed doubt over the stability of an AAP government in view of the Congress’ “track record”.

Earlier in the day, AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal met Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to stake claim to form a government in the Capital.

Making it clear that AAP will implement its own agenda, Bhushan said, “If the Congress and the BJP join hands to pull down our government, it’s their wish.”

The AAP, which has 28 legislators in the 70-member assembly, will take outside support from the Congress’ eight MLAs. No party reached the majority mark in the polls held on December 4, with the BJP emerging as the single largest party (32).

Bhushan’s comments come close on the heels of former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit giving her best wishes to the AAP while saying the Congress’ support to the rookie party was not unconditional.

“Given the past track record of the Congress party, I don’t expect that our government will survive for long.

“Even though it will be a minority government, we are prepared not to accept any condition by the Congress or the BJP,” the Supreme Court lawyer said.

A day ago, Bhushan had said the AAP had no option but to seek the Congress’ help to form a government and the BJP would be out of power despite being the single largest party — “which is undemocratic”.

Bhushan on Monday stressed the AAP was forming the ministry to prove “it is possible to run the government on the basis of the people's opinion and their views. It is possible in this country to run a government by doing away with the VIP culture.”
