This is how the Ph D guide of Abhilash G J, Dr S Sarkar reacted to the news of suicide by Abhilash.
Talking to HT, Sarkar said he was an intelligent and diligent student. He was very good at studies and had never confronted with any problem of academic nature. He further said that ordinarily no student could get fellowship from foreign universities before clearing the viva-voce. But considering the brilliance of Abhilash, Belfield University of Germany gave him fellowship soon after he submitted his thesis.
“He had come on a three-week leave from the university in Germany to appear at the viva fixed for November 9 this year. During his conversation he did not tell anything which could cause him depression on any matter. He had brought chocolates, toffees and several other petty things for his friends at the laboratory and for me also,” Dr Sarkar said.
Dr Sarkar said that during his visit to Germany last month he had met him there and spent good time with him. “I found him away from all kinds of evils which generally gripped the young men living abroad. He neither smoked nor took wine. He was a simple ideal Indian boy, he said.
Recalling his conversation with Abhilash, Dr Sarkar said that he had told him about the marriage of his brother. At the same time he had given hint that he might get marry soon after his brother’s marriage if things were all OK.
Dr Sarkar told that they were three brothers and their father an employee at the BHEL had settled at Haridwar. However, he said that he had never asked weather he was the youngest or the eldest son of the parents.
Dr Sarkar said that Prof Muller at Belfield University, who was the academic supervisor of Abhilash, was also stunned to know about the suicide. In his condolence message sent through E-mail, Prof Muller said: “We are stunned to learn about the suicide by Abhilash He was a quiet, hardworking and nice boy.
He was always busy in his laboratory.”
To a question, Dr Sarkar said that students should feel free in sharing their personal and academic problems with their teachers instead of brooding over them all the time. He said “I have no words to utter but I would definitely like to urge the young students that they should be stronger enough on mental, academic and spiritual planes to face the world full of challenges.
