About 7,000 litres spirit seized in Kerala

The spirit filled in 199 plastic cans was seized by the sales tax department officials on Wednesday.

In the crackdown on smuggling of spirit to Kerala, the sales tax department on Wednesday seized 6,965 litres of spirit worth about Rs 14 lakh from a truck at Adur checkpost near Manjeshwaram on Wednesday, department sources said.

The spirit filled in 199 plastic cans having a capacity of 35 litres each, covered with cheaper variety of wooden logs, was seized as the sales tax department officials inspected the vehicle bearing a Kerala registration number at the checkpost.

However, the truck crew fled while the checking process was on, they said.

Large quantities of spirit smuggled from Karnataka had been seized by authorities around the northern border town over the past few weeks as the spirit, used for making cheaper variety of alcohol, was having heavy demand in the wake of the coming Onam festival in Kerala.
