The regional session to be held in Mohali near Chandigarh will go a long way in gearing up the party unit in the state to confront the Akali Dal-BJP combine in the elections due in February, 2012, Punjab Congress president Mohinder Singh Kay Pee said.

It was more than 35 years ago that the AICC session was held in Punjab, he said, adding the state has been given the highest regard by holding this session of the northern states.

Delegates from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir would attend this session, which is being organised as part of the 125th anniversary of the party, Kay Pee said.

This session in Punjab assumes significance in the context of the forthcoming Assembly elections as it would give further boost to the prospects of the party by mobilising the party rank and file, he claimed.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) at a meeting here today adopted a resolution, thanking UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, people of the state and other leaders for according this honour to Punjab.
