Considering the sensitivity of the matter, the VHP and the BJP leaders jumped into the fray. A VHP delegation met the district magistrate today and handed him a memorandum.

Accusing the administration of taking a wrong decision in this case, the Hindu Jagran Manch threatened to carry out an agitation in case the new structure was not demolished.

Sources said, in view of the earlier HC order under which no construction can be allowed in the Alfred Park, the administration decided to demolish the room at the back of the mosque’s wall facing Gymkhana Club.

Tension started brewing after the administration got the small structure demolished. As people from one side started gathering at the site, local MP Ateeq Ahmad rushed to the spot. His presence cooled frayed tempers and people dispersed from after the MP left to meet the DM and other officials. What transpired between the MP and the administration could not be ascertained but sources said the administration gave its silent nod for the construction to be carried out after getting assurance from the MP that there would be no communal tension.

Meanwhile, BJP district president Narendra Deo Pandey, while terming the construction illegal, said the entire exercise was being carried out just to grab land.

The construction , he said, was totally illegal and should not be allowed at the place. The district magistrate could not be contacted for his version despite several attempts.
