Every year France wonders if it could be Mauresmo's year and this could be her best opportunity of a first grand slam title with the Frenchwoman's leading rivals affected by lack of fitness. She tuned up with successive clay-court victories in Berlin and Rome. Current ranking of three is a career high and she appears to have shrugged off a bothersome back injury. Powerful and naturally attacking, she has yet to display the mental ability to win a grand slam event, having reached only one final previously -- the Australian Open in 1999 when she lost to Martina Hingis.
