It was one of the major holds for the Congress as it had managed to win all the elections so far held in the state.

But the myth of being unassailable was broken in the 1999 election when the Congress candidate Manoranjan Bhakta was defeated by Vishnu Patha Roy of BJP.

It was a shocking turn of events for the Congress and for Mr. Bhakta too, as he had previously contested the elections in 1998 and 1996 when he had defeated his BJP counterparts by a huge margin of more than 40000 votes. But the state of events for the Congress, who is trying hard to regain the constituency after a gap of five years, is far different in the region than the previous years. Because this time the concentration is on twinning rather than merely retaining the seat.
