Few people can say they have been shot at point blank range and lived to tell the tale, let alone gone on the become an international cricketer.
But right-handed all-rounder Hall can boast just such a story after he was shot at a cash machine in 1998.
Fortunately, the bullet lodged in his hand and he recovered sufficiently to win a place in South Africa's one-day side against the West Indies the following year.
He later played a match as Gary Kirsten's opening partner against Australia, scoring a composed 46.
While his one-day average remains in the low 20s, Hall has proved more than his worth in the past.
A competitive cricketer, he needs to find a little more steel to make his bowling more dangerous.
