The first of its kind in the world, the new invention has the capability to make fire even from 12.7 bore guns ineffective.
A beaming DMSRDE director Dr KU Bhaskar Rao said the five choppers of the Indian Army would soon be equipped with the panel.
American firm Taneja Air Space which has the production rights, has made the required panels available to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bangalore. Given its utility to make a chopper well-protected in war zones, the army wants its helicopters equipped with these panels at the earliest. At present, Taneja Air Space had resources to produce 12 panels a year, said Dr Rao.
In addition, the Centre has also placed an order for nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) suits worth Rs 40 crore with the DMSRDE.
The production would soon begin at DMSRDE’s own facilities, which had the resources to produce such suits worth Rs 120 crore at present, Rao said.
Another major project the DMSRDE has undertaken is to develop data recording system for the AN-32 transport aircraft.
The agency is also developing protection covers for this system and they will be indestructible even at the temperature of 1000 degrees Celcius.
On this occasion, the DMSRDE organised an exhibition of goods researched and invented in the last couple of years.
These included anti-riot helmets, casseroles used to serve hot and delicious food to troops guarding the Siachin glacier, bullet-proof jackets, anti-mine helmets, casualty equipment, glacier bags, face masks and special suits for bomb disposal squads.
