According to police, the girl's uncle found the couple in a compromising position in an empty field near the girl's house in Balamba village near Meham town Wednesday night. He called the girl's brothers and they killed the boy on the spot and dumped his body on the outskirts of the village.

The girl was dragged back home and murdered there. They cremated her the same night to remove all proof.

"From preliminary investigations, we found that 17-year-old Rani and 21-year-old Anil were going around for a long time. The boy's family members were busy in some religious function, when he sneaked out and reached the girl's house," said Rajender Singh, station house officer of Meham police station.

"We have booked the girl's parents, her uncle and some unknown persons for the crime. We will arrest the main culprits behind this killing very soon," he said.

Forensic experts were called at the crime spot and at the cremation ground to collect clues.

Rani was a school dropout while Anil was helping his parents in farming after studying till Class 12.

Police sources said they had rounded up some of the accused and their interrogation was on. The body of the boy was spotted by one of his family members in the wee hours Thursday and they informed the police.

Anil's father Rajbir Singh registered a complaint with the police.

In his complaint he alleged that the girl's father Ram Kumar, mother Bimla, uncles Satpal, Birender Singh and brothers Sombir and Ombir were responsible for killing his son.

The incident comes close on the heels of another honour killing where a 21-year-old man was lynched for marrying against the wishes of his community in Haryana's Jind district last month.
