It’s a vital turn in his career, an opportunity that could make him a widely hosan naed actor on the global scene. Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah and all those veterans who have figured in international projects, are more than likely to eat their hearts out.
Anupam Kher has bagged the key role of a contract killer in an Ang Lee film, no less. The actor leaves for Shanghai in a couple of days for a ten-day shooting schedule with the director who as everyone and their uncles know won the Best Director Oscar for Brokeback Mountain last year.
Which prompts my first somewhat jokey question to him.
Anupam, heard the news. Great! Are you playing a gay guy in Ang Lee’s movie? Of course not.. why do you say that? Remember he made Brokeback Mountain.
Yes, now do get serious. It’s a thriller that Ang Lee is making…it’s in Chinese.. its English title is Lust, Caution. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am. For him, I would have done a walkon part. I really feel privileged and honoured. Naturally.
So where do you shoot…in the mountains?
I’m flying to Shanghai where I think we’ll be shooting in a studio. Remember those beauteous mountains in Brokeback Mountain, the swirling mists, the bamboo jungles and the snowcapped ranges in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon…
I think you are a great fan of Ang Lee.
Yes I am, now tell me all about your role.
I wish I could.. but you know every project is bound by a code of confidentiality.
Fine, good luck Anupam.. tell me all when you get back.
