The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA), whose membership was 99 percent Indian American, is donating $20,000 towards relief efforts for the Oct 8 earthquake which struck Pakistan and parts of India and Afghanistan.

Manhar P. Rama, chairman of AAHOA said the organization and its members "offer condolences to the families of the victims and the people and governments of India and Pakistan."

"With this donation, we join the international relief effort and strongly encourage others in the industry to come forth and join the global community as it provides assistance to millions of people unable to help themselves in this crisis. I encourage all our members to take this opportunity to show the extent of AAHOA's commitment to humanitarian efforts in the wake of this natural disaster."

During Hurricane Katrina, AAHOA provided thousands of dollars worth of room and board for displaced people from Louisiana, in its various member hotels and motels.

"As citizens of the world, it is the responsibility of all human beings to extend their assistance in this humanitarian relief work and be a part of that purpose in life which is to create global harmony and peace," Rama added.

AAHOA president Fred Schwartz said "AAHOA members, along with the rest of the industry, understand the need to provide financial assistance for food, shelter, and health care because it is simply the right thing to do."

Founded in 1989 and representing more than 8,700 members, the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) is a leading force in the American hospitality industry and considers itself one of the most powerful Asian-American advocacy groups in the United States.

According to data provided by the organization, the members together owned more than 22,000 hotels with one million rooms across the nation. They represent over 50 percent of the economy class properties and nearly 37 percent of all hotel properties in the US.

AAHOA supports its members through year-round educational programs and advocacy in the legislature, media, and hospitality industry and through community service.
