Assam state Election Commissioner C K Sarma, tipped to be a Congress candidate in the coming Lok Sabha poll, on Sunday resigned from his post, official sources said.

After submitting his papers, Sarma applied for membership of the Congress, according to sources in the party. It has been reported that he would contest from from Mangaldoi constituency.
Opposition parties including the BJP and the Asom Gana Parishad had questioned Sarma's continuance in office and demanded his resignation.
Meanwhile, a total of 126 Congress members have applied for nomination papers to contest the L S poll in the party ticket.
Today is the party's last day for party members to apply for nomination, party sources said.
