AU UG admission boat faces rough weather

ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY'S (AU) under graduate admission process has hit rough weather. The newly appointed chairmen? one each for the three streams of Arts, Science and Commerce? are said to be facing a number of hardships thanks primarily to poor co-ordination and support being extended by the first team that handled the UG admissions under the UGAT-2006 Director Prof AP Sinha but found itself summarily 'dismissed' by the Vice-Chancellor just one day after being congratulated for work well done.

ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY'S (AU) under graduate admission process has hit rough weather.

The newly appointed chairmen— one each for the three streams of Arts, Science and Commerce— are said to be facing a number of hardships thanks primarily to poor co-ordination and support being extended by the first team that handled the UG admissions under the UGAT-2006 Director Prof AP Sinha but found itself summarily 'dismissed' by the Vice-Chancellor just one day after being congratulated for work well done.

If sources are to be believed, the three chairmen have simply been shown the admission results and explained where the relevant files have been saved on the computers by the first team after which they have been left to fend on their own.

The new team has neither been handed over a hard-copy of the merit lists of the three streams nor have they been handed over the final admission results on a CD.

In the past, whenever the chairmen for the admission process were appointed, the first team along with the Undergraduate Admission Test director remained present to help out wherever they were needed.

However, this time round, with the varsity under pressure after the arrest of 15 persons for allegedly being involved in the PG admission test paper leak, it is
believed that the first team was not even informed about the appointment of the chairmen till the very last moment.

Insiders claim that the members of the first team are upset after finding themselves virtually out of the very process that they had initiated. This is believed to have led to the relations between the first team and the new one being so poor that formal handing over of the charge could take place almost five days after the appointment of the three chairmen—Dr Krishan Kumar of Zoology department for BSc-I, Dr HK Singh of Commerce department for the BCom-I and Prof BN Mishra of the Geography department for the BA-I course, on July 2.

It was mainly these problems that led to the formal scrapping of the first admission process schedule that specified the admissions to kick off from July 11 and the fact that the new UG admission schedule has not been announced till date.

On being contacted, the chairman for BA admissions Prof BN Mishra accepted that problems were being faced by him and his team.

"It took us five days to get the charge and another five days to get to know and sort out the merit. All the three chairmen were expecting that the Undergraduate Admission Test Director Prof AP Sinha will be coming to help us out as in the past. But that has not happened. Now we are trying to clear some anomalies that have emerged," he said.

Prof Mishra said that efforts are on at a war-footing to announce the new undergraduate admission schedule within the next 48 hours.
