People across Bangladesh on Saturday remembered those killed on the day one of the Pakistani Army operation to crush the movement for an independent country in 1971.

On this day in 1971, the Pakistani army under its 'Operation Search Light' killed at least 7,000 people in the capital Dhaka with targets being the Dhaka University and the police headquarters.

Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman proclaimed independence on March 26 and the nine-month war ended in victory on December 16 with Bangladesh emerging as an independent country.

Candle light vigils are being organised along with special prayers for the martyrs, many of them unknown.

Bangladesh celebrates its 36th Independence and National Day on Sunday.
