Although these children are sent to reform houses instead of jail, but still if a few things are kept in mind then such situations may not arise altogether.
"It has been deduced that family environment affects the child. If there is continuous tension between the mother and father, or there is lack of affection, or any kind of immoral activity is done before the child then there are chances of his reacting to it. Parents who think that admission in a reputed school is enough on their part, they should give this notion a second thought as amiable environment at home is also necessary," said Dr Kamlesh Tiwari, psychologist at the Bureau of Psychology here.
Petty crimes such as pick-pocketing and small thefts have become the order of the day . An eight-year-old boy tried to run away with the money he found in the cash box of a PCO owner when the owner left the place for a few minutes.
Thus age is no more a bar in these incidents.
"This is true that financial problems in the family, bad treatment by step-mother/ father, or inappropriate attention given to the child also leads him/her towards crime. Disputes and continuous tension between the parents is also the problem for the child," said Dr Tiwari.
It is necessary to discuss the financial position of the family with the child so that he knows his limits and extends his support in any kind of problem, he added. Even the environment outside the house is also responsible for the person to indulge in crime. "Parents should be aware of the kind of neighbours they have. Even the friends' circle of the child affects his/her behaviour such as wrong choice of friends may ingrain the habit of lying, blaming others or quitting the home," said Dr Tiwari.
Severe punishment by parents should be avoided as this makes the child stubborn and ready to indulge in anti-social activity to get rid of his frustration.
"Violence shown in movies and books with violence based themes are also not good for the children to read.
It is necessary to provide good environment at home which could be an example for the child to lead a meaningful life. Parents should contact the psychologist in case they detect any kind of psychological problem. Children should be motivated to do some creative work and moral values should be inculcated in them," added Dr Tiwari.
