Bappi Lahiri, known as much for his jewellery collection as for his music, is working on multiple projects - as a singer, composer and even actor.

In Gita in Paradise, starring Zeenat Aman, Bappi is not only composing the music, but will also put in a cameo, apparently.

Bappi earlier appeared in films like Deepak Balraj Vij’s Bomb Blast (1993), Kishore Kumar’s Badhti Ka Naam Dhadi (1974), Kalaakaar (1983), Bombay Girls (2001) and the Marathi film Dokyala Taap Nahin (1990).

With Gita in Paradise, he ventures into US cinema. "One Mr Moody is producing the film and Benny Mathew is directing it. The central character is a girl (played Parul Bhatia), and I have a very interesting role in the film. They are going to have one hero from India as well." Lahiri, 53, has had a song number picturised on him in the forthcoming Cabaret, for which he has also composed the music.

Other films for which he has composed recently are

Blackmailer

(with Apache Indian), a film for Jayapradha and Sanjay Sharma’s

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron.

"Then there will be a big announcement within a week," he says.

Thanks to his fondness for Lord Ganesha, the composer has named his son Bappa after the slogan Ganapati Bappa Morya. "Whatever I am, all of it is thanks to the grace of God." The last time Bappi went into production (with the Budhadeb Dasgupta-directed Lal Darja) he won a National Award. "I am hoping for one as a music director for Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara," he says hopefully.
