SK Pandey, additional director general (ADG), Home guards, was at Arera Club Gym in the morning when he felt restless and began perspiring before he collapsed. The 1988 batch officer was rushed to the nearby JP Hospital but he had already died by then.

Superintendent of the hospital, Dr AK Shukla said possible cause of the death was cardiac arrest. However, the exact cause of death will be determined after post-mortem. Doctors are also yet to ascertain if the officer, who hails from Bihar’s Bhojpur, had any history of heart ailment.

The IPS officer’s death has now drawn attention to people working out at gymnasiums without the guidance of a trained expert or coach.

According to the home guard public relations officer Pradeep Bhatia, Pandey held several posts including ADG anti-Naxal campaign, DIG and IG SPG, New Delhi, DIG SPE (Lokayukta) and SP Mandla, Sarguja and Jabalpur.

Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan conveyed his condolences, calling the death an irreparable loss.
