COME MARCH and the citizens may see the big guns of billiards and snooker like Michael Ferreira, either playing or coaching players. Former world billiards champion and national chief coach Manoj Kothari visited Bhopal today to explore prospects of holding billiards and snooker competition in the State capital. He has recommended holding one of the selection camps cum national tournaments in Bhopal (BHEL) in mid-March. The camp will be organised to select the national team for the Asian Games to be held in Doha later this year. It would be one of the four camps to be organised at different centres. Talking to the Hindustan Times, he shared his experience of the one-day visit.

Q1. What was the purpose of visiting Bhopal?

Kothari: I was invited by the State Sports and Youth Welfare Department to explore the opportunities for billiards and snooker available in Bhopal. It was a nice visit. The enthusiasm and interest shown by the department is encouraging. In my view proper treatment to this game in capital would make Bhopal one of the best centres in the country. I will recommend to the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI) to allocate a national camp to Bhopal.

Q2. Do you think Bhopal is late in popularising billiards and snooker events?

Kothari: Yes, Bhopal should have started popularising it earlier. But still, it is the right time, as big championships like Asian Games and others are to be organised in near future.

Q3. Have you given any suggestion to improve standard of billiards and snooker in Bhopal?

Kothari: Billiards and snooker is well established in Indore and Gwalior. They have been organising a number of events. I visited BHEL Senior Club and found basic facilities are available over there. But I asked them to arrange some of the other facilities like airconditioners and viewers’ gallery. After completing all these formalities, that venue would be the best for this game.

Q4. Do you think State Sports Department is prepared to organise any big event?

Kothari: I would like to appreciate the Sports Department for giving right and positive approach for raising the standard of billiards. Their approach of providing tables at the school level will definitely give impetus to billiards and snooker. The way the Sports Department has shown interest is good for the game. If they go with the same
