AFTER THE huge success of National Billiards and Snooker Tournament that concluded recently in Bhopal, the Sports and Youth Welfare Department has decided to provide snooker and billiards tables in schools of six districts of the State.

The selected districts include Indore, Ujjain, Rewa, Gwalior, Jabalpur and Sagar. Every district will get two tables each. According to the sources, the objective of distributing tables is to encourage students’ interest in the game.

The department provided tables in two schools of Bhopal last year, Model Higher Secondary School and School of Excellence. Talking to the Hindustan Times, Director Sports Sanjay Chaudhary said that apart from organising the event of state and national level, the department is committed to popularise the game by giving importance to the infrastructure and welfare of players.

“Organising the event was part of the bigger process of giving thrust to the sports activities. Distributing snooker and billiards tables is also part of this process”, said Chaudhary.

Collectors of the respective districts where tables are to distribute selected the beneficiary schools. The department will start distributing tables from April. The department has also planned to appoint trainers at these schools. The training centres will be open to all school students of the surrounding areas.

On being asked, the Director said that billiards and snooker is one of the sports being dominated by the country at the international level and the State is quite optimistic of good players from this game in near future. “The overwhelming response in the national billiards and snooker tournament envisages that students are keen to learn and excel in this game”, he opined.

The department is ready to provide necessary facilities the players interested in the game, he added.
