BJP insincere in opposing foreign origin issue: Samajwadi Party

SP leader Amar Singh has said that his party would not support any law to debar people of foreign origin from contesting for the PM post.

Accusing BJP of being insincere in opposing high posts to people of foreign origin, Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh on Saturday said his party would not support any move by the saffron party to bring a law to debar such people from becoming Prime Minister.

"BJP is not honest and sincere in bringing a bill in Parliament against giving high posts to people of foreign origin. Therefore, we will not back any effort by BJP to bring such a law to prevent people of foreign origin from holding the post of Prime Minister", he told reporters here.

Singh said when Samajwadi Party brought a private members' bill in Rajya Sabha for this purpose, BJP did not support it.

Likewise, when the matter was raised by former Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma in the Constitution Review Commission, BJP did not support it, he said.

On the recent stampede at Lucknow during the saree distribution function organised by BJP leader Lalji Tandon, he said Election Commission's directive would be followed.

Charging BJP with raising the Bofors, foreign origin and Ram temple issues before every election in its bid to capture votes, Singh said Samajwadi Party is against use of these issues for petty political gains.
