Uttara Kannada district Superintendent of Police S Mukherjee told PTI by telephone that Thimmappa Honnappa Naik, a former Taluka President of BJP, succumbed to gunshot wounds he sustained in the attack.

Mukherjee said police are looking out for clues, and an investigation is on. A post-mortem is being conducted in a Manipal hospital and after the procedure, it would be known whether he received bullets or pellets in the incident.
