According to police, there was a rumour of somebody having planted bombs in three places -- Bank of Baroda, State Bank of India and the post office in the town of Godhra, 140 kilometres from Ahmedabad.

Police rushed immediately with bomb disposal squads and forensics teams but discovered the rumour was a hoax.

After the February 19 blast at the Ahmedabad railway station that injured 14 people, there have been several bomb scares in major cities of central and southern Gujarat.

The town of Godhra has been in the news since the burning of the Sabarmati Express coach on February 27, 2002, in which several Hindu rightwing activists died.

The incident triggered communal frenzy across the state, killing 1,000 people, mostly Muslims.
