Karan, a resident of Bharsi village in Gorakhpur district, about 275 km from here, rescued 37-year-old Rinki who Wednesday jumped into the Saryu river with her three daughters, aged between two and six.

"Karan was playing with his friends along the river bank when he saw Rinki and her daughters drowning. He asked his friends to cooperate and help him save the woman and her daughters. However, when his friends refused, Karan alone jumped into the river," Inspector Rajesh Rai told IANS over phone.

With the help of a fishing net, Karan first managed to bring the three girls near the shore, who were taken out by others who had assembled near the riverbank by then. After rescuing the girls, Karan again went into the river and saved Rinki.

According to the police, some marital problems prompted Rinki to attempt suicide with her daughters.

Rinki and her daughters are being treated at a hospital and are out of danger, police said.
