BRC lift trophy via tiebreaker

BRC DANAPUR on Sunday lifted the trophy by defeating Army (Bangalore) in tiebreaker in the final of the All India Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Gold Cup Hockey Tournament played at Gandhi mini stadium here.

BRC DANAPUR on Sunday lifted the trophy by defeating Army (Bangalore) in tiebreaker in the final of the All India Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Gold Cup Hockey Tournament played at Gandhi mini stadium here.

It was a tough fight between the two teams. Both earned two short corners each but failed to convert them into goals. Since both the teams failed to score in the stipulated time, the tiebreaker rule was applied and Danapur won the 4-2.

Urban Administration Minister Jayant Malaiya was the chief guest while Member of Parliament Sartaj Singh presided over the function. On a request by the organising committee, Malaiya announced to provide Rs 1 lakh every year for the tournament.

Textbook Corporation chairman Vijaypal Singh gave a cheque of Rs 50,000 to MP sports development committee and district hockey association, the organising bodies.

Dr K Mathew Thomas, in the memory of his father, presented Rs 21,000 cash and a trophy to the winner team and Mihani family in memory of the late Vasudev Mihani presented Rs 11,000 cash and a trophy to the runners-up.

Over a dozen senior hockey players were also felicitated.
