The van in which Apps, who works for Reuters, a video cameraman and a still photographer were travelling, had collided with a tractor at the village of Ponnani near Welikanda on the border of Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa districts in the wee hours.

The Sri Lankan Air Force flew out the injured to Colombo. The British High Commission said that it was rendering counsellor services to Apps.

Apps had been covering the conflict in North-East Sri Lanka on a regular basis.
