Former UP minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate for the Lok Sabha polls from the Firozabad constituency, Chaudhary Basheer landed in trouble after his pregnant wife lodged a complaint on Tuesday accusing him of harassment over dowry, unnatural sex and intimidating her.
Sources said that Nagma, Basheer's wife, told the senior superintendent of police, Agra, that Basheer with whom she solemnized wedding on November 11, 2012, was along with his mother and brother, pressurizing her to bring more dowry from her parents.
Nagma, reportedly the third wife of Basheer, alleged that even the Basheer's staff used to harass her when she refused demands to bring more dowry.
Sources said that Nagma was also against the illicit relation of Basheer with another woman. She alleges that when she objected to this she was beaten up badly.
Nagma further said things did not change even after she got pregnant. Instead, she was subjected to unnatural sex and asked to stay away from home.
“On the complaint handed over by wife of Chaudhary Basheer, a case has been registered at Mantola police station u/s 323, 506, 498-A, 377 of Indian Penal Code and ¾ of Prevention of Dowry Act,” SSP Subhash Chandra Dubey said and added that district magistrate has constituted a panel of doctors for conducting medical test of the complainant.
“Police was investigating the case and would get the statement of complainant recorded in court for fair trial,” he said.
On arresting Basheer, he said police would take steps as and when required.
Meanwhile, Basheer denied all allegations and blamed the ‘over ambitious brothers’ of his wife Nagma for framing him.
It may be noted that Basheer is not new to controversies ever since he began his political career. In 2002 he was elected MLA on a BSP ticket from the Agra Cantonment assembly seat, and rose to become a minister in the state cabinet. He got married to Chaudhary Ghazala Lari, an MLA from Deoria and switched loyalties to the Samajwadi Party which gave him a ticket in the following assembly elections, but he lost to a BSP candidate.
Chaudhary then switched over to the Congress. But when he was denied a ticket from Agra South, he contested the 2012 assembly election as a candidate for the Rashtriya Samanta Dal but lost.
Meanwhile, he continued to be in the news for unpleasant reasons including scams and property disputes. He also parted ways with his wife, Ghazala Lari in the meantime.
