At a three hour meeting held at his official residence, the newly-elected MLA from West Pendam (SC) seat Neeru Sewa moved a resolution proposing Chamling's name for the post of the leader of the SDF legislature party.
Another ruling party MLA from Rangang-Yangang seat C B Karki seconded her proposal and was joined by other legislators to unanimously elect the 59 year-old SDF President as leader.
Chamling, who is set to take over their reins of the Himalayan state for a record fourth successive term thanked his colleagues for reposing their trust in his leadership.
The SDF President is expected to meet the Governor BP Singh later in the day and stake claim to form the next government in Sikkim, the ruling party sources said.
The swearing-in ceremony of the Chamling government has been tentatively scheduled for May 20 next, they said.
The SDF had swept the Assembly polls held recently winning all 32 assembly seats, besides the lone Lok Sabha seat.
