This luxuriously appointed restaurant (onyx on the walls and authentic copies of ancient Chinese artifacts sourced from Beijing), carrying the signature of Nelson Wang (inventor of Chicken Manchurian and the favourite chef of the Bachchan family), opened with much hype and raised expectations, and a long waiting period. But the rapidity with which disappointment set in surprised many.
Primarily, it was because people started comparing China Garden either with the original in Mumbai (where the service is far superior), or with the incredibly successful Imperial Garden in the vicinity (where the food has set new standards). The China Garden menu has few surprises, but regulars vouch for its Sichuan Crab, Tiger Prawns in Hot Garlic Sauce, Sapo Chicken (garlic chicken served in a claypot with a fire underneath), Special Pepper Prawns, Kung Pao Potatoes with Okra, and Corn Cream, which couldn't get more un-Chinese. The restaurant must get its service in order if it wants to survive beyond the honeymoon period.
