Hapless citizens had to face more than six hours of night rostering. Power supply to the city was snapped at 11 pm on Tuesday and was restored at 5.15 am on Wednesday. While in some areas of the city power supply was restored after 6 am.
However, once again power supply to the entire city was snapped at 7 am but was restored at 10.30 am. Fortunately, for most of the day till 4 pm there was no rostering. Then again power supply to the entire city was snapped at 4 pm and was restored at 6 pm.
The unprecedented night rostering in the city has left Kanpurites infuriated. As power supply during most of the day was also snapped on Tuesday, people were expecting some respite from power cut at night but all their expectations were belied. Even invertors are proving to be no solace as in the absence of power supply they do not get charged. As a last resort people have started spending their nights out on the streets.
In several localities, people in groups were seen spending night in the open on folding beds and traditional cots.
Manoj, who works as a sweeper in a hotel, said, “For the poor there is no option but to spend the night on the street. We cannot afford invertors or generators.”
He added for children continuous nights of power cuts had become unbearable. Resentment against power crisis is brewing among the people and could become a major law and order problem if the crisis continues.
Last year also power crisis in the peak summer months of May and June proved to be a law and order problem and more than 50 instances of attack on substations and KESCo officials were reported.
