His uncle's home at Beypore near Kerala in Kozhikode district was in a sombre mood as the news came that Unni, 28, is no more.
He was seriously injured on Thursday night when he led an NSG commando group to flush out the terrorists at the Taj hotel in south Mumbai where the terrorists had been holding a number of people hostage.
"He was scheduled to come here next month," his uncle Ashok Kumar told mediapersons.
Unnikrishnan was on deputation to the NSG for the past 18 months.
His parents are based in Bangalore.
