Six policemen including a station house officer were allegedly beaten up by locals who mistook them for goons on Saturday. Official sources said a squad led by Gursai police SHO arrived in Kashmir to apprehend the suspects who were booked in a case filed on June 25. The squad members. travelling in an SUV, passed through Dalgate Road. "When they reached Munawerabad near the HDFC Bank branch office, a crowd consisting of mostly young people assembled there and began pelting stones at the vehicle,"they added.
All the six policemen, who were dressed in civilian clothes sustained injuries in the incident.
During a search conducted in Srinagar, the police squad arrested one of the suspects, Abdul Majeed Ganie, after he was identified by the other suspect, Irfan Ahmad Khan, who was nabbed earlier. However, both managed to escape.
Soon after the incident, a police team arrived at the scene and took the injured cops to a nearby hospital. The police have filed a case and have begun investigations.
