The Purainia panchayat ordered tonsuring the head of Sonalal Rai, 22, and Pramila Devi, 35, last Wednesday, said superintendent of police Ganesh Kumar. The couple were later made to walk through the village, he said.

The traumatised woman later lodged an FIR against 12 persons and 20 unidentified ones under various sections of the IPC for insulting and abusing her, Kumar said. Prime accused Mukhia Subhash Prasad Yadav has been arrested, while raids are on to arrest the other accused.
