CPI warns of Cong-Left conflict on Iran

Party's national secretary D Raja said, "The Government should not come under any US pressure on the issue."

The CPI has asked the Congress-led UPA Government not to succumb to the US pressure on the International Atomic Energy Agency vote on Iran.

National Secretary D Raja on Sunday warned that the Government's vote against Iran would lead to a 'major conflict' between Congress and the Left and would have serious consequences.

"If the Government repeats the mistake it made last time on the issue of IAEA vote on Iran, then it will lead to a major conflict between Congress and the Left parties with serious consequences," Raja said.

"All the four Left parties have written a joint letter to the Government demanding that either it should abstain from voting or should vote against the US backed IAEA vote on Iran.

"The Government should not come under any US pressure on the issue," Raja added.

Strongly condemning the US pressure on the issue, he said, "We are a sovereign nation and the US has no business to dictate terms to our government."

When asked about the definition of serious consequences, Raja said, 'Let them first take a stand on the issue'.

He also opposed the Government decision to allow FDI in retail sector and warned that if the move was not checked then the Left parties would launch a nationwide agitation along with retail traders.

The Left leaders have also written a letter to the Finance Minister on the issue and are awaiting his reply, he said.
