Crime against women on rise

CRIME AGAINST women has taken a new height in the district. Notwithstanding several missives to the SSP by senior cops to curb crime effectively, hardly any decline has been witnessed in the crime graph in the district during the last month. While crime in general refuses to look back, women, in particular, appear to be at the receiving end.

Worse, cops have been manipulating things in a bid to minimise crime.
Several incidents took place last month and cops did not record the crime under the relevant head. In some cases, they were even accused of not recording the crime at all.

A look at the crime figures during the last month reveals the prevailing state of affairs.

Recorded figures show two women were murdered last month. Also, two women were molested in the district during the last month.

Cops, on condition of anonymity, say the records are fudged at the behest of those, who are answerable in a situation where there is an increase in crime rate.

Five women were abducted and raped last month while this figure stood at four last year in this month. Cases against four persons were lodged for teasing women while no case was lodged under this head last year in the month of October.

Shockingly, cases under harassment and torture of women have seen an abnormal increase and despite allegations of tampering of records 20 cases were recorded under this head last month.

On the other hand, only seven cases under this head were recorded last year.

Besides, there has been a general increase in cases like chain-snatching, dowry murder and rape.

If police sources are to be believed there is at least one case of rape in the district every 24 hour but the same is either hidden by the victim for fear of getting ostracised or the police deliberately avoid it even if the same comes to their knowledge.

On their part, wrong doers do not seem to be sparing women coming from poor background. Crime against women from SC/ST category has also witnessed an upward swing.

Cases of burglary have also gone up. Ten cases were shown under the burglary head last month while the same figures stood at eight earlier. Murder figures have also seen an unprecedented rise. As many as 19 persons were done to death last month in comparison to 13 during the corresponding period last year.

Sources said, had the police taken preventive steps, many cases of murders could have been checked.
