Martyn's one-day debut as a 21-year-old was not exactly the glorious introduction to international cricket that he would have hoped for.
He was in and out of the team over the ensuing 12 months and passed 50 only once before being dropped.
On his return to the international fold over four years later, he again took time to settle and played only a bit part in the last World Cup.
But since adapting to the demands of the 50-over game he has become an integral part of the set-up.
His value to the team can be gauged by the fact that he has batted in every position from one to eight.
And he scored his first one-day ton when he carried his bat against New Zealand, after stepping in and filling an opening spot.
