A team spokeswoman said Davidson was an obvious choice, with regular Austrian test driver Alex Wurz taking part in qualifying with Peugeot for the Le Mans 24 Hours race in France this weekend.

Davidson, 29, was a Honda test driver from 2002 to 2006 before joining Honda-backed Super Aguri.

The Briton, who also took part in a straight-line test for Honda in Spain over the Monaco Grand Prix weekend last month, was due to test all day at the Circuit de Catalunya before handing over to Brazilian race driver Rubens Barrichello.
