The Delhi high court on Wednesday pulled up the Delhi Police for failing to submit the post-mortem report of Nido Taniam, the 19-year old student from Arunachal Pradesh who died last week allegedly after being beaten up by a group of men in Lajpat Nagar.
The bench, which had taken suo-moto cognisance of media reports of Nido Taniam’s death, also spelt as Tania, refused to accept the status report filed by Delhi Police on Wednesday, asking the police to file it along with the post-mortem report.
A bench comprising chief justice NV Ramana and justice RS Endlaw reacted sharply to the police’s request for more time to submit the report.

“If you are unable to give post-mortem report in so many days in a fast-tracked case like this, what will be the status of other cases? We can only say the infrastructure (forensic labs) is in a primitive stage in the national capital,” the bench said.
Advocate Dayan Krishnan, appearing for Delhi police assured the court that the report will be submitted in a couple of days as the toxicology and viscera has been sent to the CBI’s Central Forensic Science Laboratory. Krishnan didn’t want to comment on the nature of injuries till the report was available.
During the brief hearing, additional solicitor general Rajeev Mehra said the home ministry will submit a report on the measures taken for safety of northeastern people who are staying in Delhi.
The court will next hear the issue on February 7.
